This workshop is designed to assist and advise line managers in personnel and industrial agreements. It will discuss the origin of the labor movement in The Bahamas, identify key elements of labor-management relations and the role of International Labor Organization (ILO). Labour laws, including the Fair Labor Standards Act and the Industrial Relations Act of the Bahamas and their amendments will be discussed. Case histories of selected labor disputes in The Bahamas and other countries will be examined as well as current developments in labor management relations around the world.
Participants will learn how to describe major criteria used to determine equal employment opportunity and affirmative action compliance or noncompliance, explain what is meant by the term discrimination, discuss the structure and management of unions in the United States, describe the union organization and collective bargaining processes, explain how grievance system is part of administering and interpreting a labor agreement, describe steps that can be taken to effectively manage employee discipline, and discuss the elements of a disciplinary system
